I’m embarrassed to say I’m not aware of many Weird West stories. As far as I know, the genre is what if the man with no name ran into werewolves or leprechauns or China men. Lawyer man Tom Tuttle has strayed from tradition and chose vampires for Ol’ Sawyer Bain to deal with. Never before has a cowboy shot a vampire. If you tell me differ you can go fuck your horse, mister. Sawyer is your typical used to be a gunslinger gunslinger. However, his backstory does deviate from the norm if’n you don’t mind spoilers later in the review.
Anyways, Sawyer is looking for Half-A-Rock Hill. His uppity wife Mary is supposedly there. She ran off with a Mexican…as far as Sawyer knows. We the audience do know this is a vampire story because vampire form Carlos Gilberto welcomes us to the story like the Crypt Keeper. That page felt unnecessary to me. Sawyer thinks he’s just going to gun down this beaner and drag his willful wife home. He got another think comin’. Ignorant Sawyer rides into a vampire ridden town at sundown. Page 11 is fucking fantastic.
The bloodscukas swarm Sawyer. He quickly realizes his guns can’t put them down for good and flees. Sawyer finds a hiding spot and is then cornered by illegal Carlos. Sawyer uses a wooden hat rack as a spear/stake. This is exactly how a China man killed my dog. Carlos spills the beans on his wicked brotherhood to try and save hisself. At this point Sawyer becomes a vampire expert. The other vampires come for Sawyer again and he temporarily saves himself with the vampires can’t enter without being invited rule.
We then learn how Sawyer met Mary. Sawyer had a quickdraw at high noon and Sawyer won. However, the bullet ricocheted and killed Mary’s daughter. They then fell in love. What a peculiar meet cute. I’m not saying it’s impossible for a woman, who I have to assume is a widow, falling in love with her child’s manslaughterer. Foids do love fellas who kill things. I’m not sure that extends to killing their kids. I don’t know, do abortion doctors get laid a lot? This is why womenfolk shouldn’t vote.
She better be a widow. Can you imagine being her husband and she leaves you for the guy who killed your daughter? Pffft women. I’m I right?
Anyway, the two falling in love after that tragedy could be an entire movie. In Seven Amens Before Sundown it feels like a page is missing. Maybe the sequel will show more because it doesn’t look like she was kidnapped and the vampires can’t hypnotize.
Then Sawyer sets a trap for the vampires. It works, but it missed Mary and wounded Sawyer. So Sawyer drinks a crippled/maimed vampire’s blood to become a vampire. Sawyer wants to hunt down Mary to free her from being a vampire.
Overall, I think it is a good comic.
